I had an interesting problem with a client's Mail today. After migrating to a new i7 iMac Mail worked but crashed and had to forced to quit whenever you tried to edit the preferences. After searching the web and Apple's support site with no luck I devised a plan to trash the ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist file and then manually rebuild the accounts. There is a bug with Apple Mail's Rules when dealing with auto replies. If you configure an auto reply with the Rules feature, it works but the text you want to have added to the reply does not get added...kind of ruins the usefulness of auto replies. I just installed Leopard (Mac OS X 10.5) on my G4 PowerBook and have made these notes as a type of review. I like it a lot but it feels like a .0 release. When cropping photos in Photoshop the default setting is set such that the crop line will "snap" to the edge of the photo if you are manipulating the line within a few pixels of the edge. The newest update from Apple is good and you can absolutely install it. As always do so after a fresh restart, current backup and repairing permisssions. All the current updates listed by Apple's Software Update should be installed now. BUT...the current best advice includes a couple important points:- Eject and then turn off any FireWire external disks-Perform a "Repair Permissions" using Disk Utility before and after the update.Call me if you need help on these issues. 10.3.8 is the current big one.

It looks like Apple completed the job of patching the security flaw mentioned earlier. All Macintosh users should run the Software Update Utility from the System Preferences and install all the security updates up to and including the one with today's date, June 7, 2004.

A serious security flaw in Mac OS X showed up today. Mac OS 9 users are not affected. It could allow unscrupulous webmasters the ability to delete your home folder and everything in it just by visiting a webpage. For now web browsing could be dangerous. There is a Mac Trojan Horse that will erase your home folder in OS X. But unless you download and launch the file that says it will install Microsoft Office for free you won't suffer from it. Panther currently has some network issues that make it difficult for the average user to keep up to date on what network services are being used.
